Teachers Connecting Play to Learning

Hello Everyone,

I have been so very busy lately and have not been able to blog. I just now finished with therapy on my arm...yaaaaay!  It is over. That occupied most of my time.  I apologize again.

Today I want to talk a little about children and "play."  I am very big on children learning through playing.  Especially preschoolers.  How many of you, as teachers, really understand what goes on when you observe children playing?

I read an article from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recently.  The article was an eye-opener for me.  It basically explained one aspect of the activity (in the article the children were at block play) and how we as educators can expand on how we ASK QUESTIONS to ensure a deeper level of thinking on the child's part.  So for example, when a child is building in the block center, one may ask, Is your block tower a castle?  Who lives there, a king and queen?  On the other hand, you could ask questions that require the child to deeply think about her structure.  For instance, you could ask the child how is it that the tower is standing so tall and what makes it stay that way without falling?  What is holding it all in place?  What size blocks did you use to create the bottom and why do you think they worked to help it not fall over?

This is just a tiny example of what I read and I loved it. The information I read came from a book that was written by  Marcia L. Nell, PhD and Walter F. Drew, EdD, titled, From Play to Practice.
I already ordered the book and I am attaching the link below so that you can also order the book if you'd like.  I think it is going to be a great addition to my collection of resources.

Also check out my freebies page, I've added a new FREEBIE for spring. It's called
"Upper and Lower Case Alphabet Match with Recording Sheets"
